Alicia Keys showed up to the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards wearing no makeup, and some people took offense.
So the singer took to Twitter to explain that even though she’s not wearing makeup, you still can. “Y’all, me choosing to be makeup free doesn’t mean I’m anti-makeup. Do you!” she wrote.
Keys’ makeup-free look shouldn’t have come as a big surprise since she’s been doing it ever since dedicating herself to the #NoMakeup movement this summer. So far, she’s been without a stitch of makeup at the Democratic National Convention, on magazine covers – and even for her new stint as a coach on The Voice.
Keys wrote in an essay on the subject for Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter in May. “I hope to God it’s a revolution. ‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”
