If the Hawaiian shirt was a person, he’d be shouting “summer” at the top of his lungs while drinking a pineapple-based cocktail with a curly straw. He’s a bit of a character, as we reserved Brits would say loud, relaxed and daft.
While in Hawaii, the Aloha shirt is considered formal attire the equivalent of a shirt, tie and trousers everywhere else in the world, it’s still the ultimate playful holiday piece, ready to party all night and sleep on the beach all day.
An 80s Tom Sellick loved them, Elvis was a fan, while modern patrons include Harry Styles, Jared Leto, Diane Kruger and Alexa Chung. The trick to wearing them without your friends taking the piss is to keep the rest of your outfit pared-back. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a paradise-like idyll like Hawaii, so you’re probably best not wearing them to the office, but they are perfect summer weekend fodder.
