Amy Schumer opens up about the lesser-known parts of her personal history in her collection of essays, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo.
Schumer writes about a physically and emotionally abusive relationship that she was involved in during her early 20s. She describes instances wherein her boyfriend at the time began shoving her until she fell during fights and verbally criticized her on a regular basis. One night in particular, the abuse reached a climax when he shoved her onto a hood of a car, banging her head and elbow into the vehicle. Schumer tried to escape as her boyfriend broke a mug over his head and pounded himself on a light fixture.
“He grabbed a huge butcher knife from a drawer. And that’s when I was sure he was going to kill me,” writes Schumer in her book. “It can happen to anyone. You’re not alone if it’s happening to you, and you’re not exempt if it hasn’t happened to you yet.
Schumer is currently dating Ben Hanisch, the founder of a custom furniture company in Chicago, who she met on a dating app that was suggested by SNL’s Vanessa Bayer.
“We sent each other very simple hellos and short, funny messages,” described Schumer of her first meeting with Hanisch in the middle of the rain as he held a paper bag with a bottle of wine. “We smiled at each other and in that moment, everything felt right.”
Schumer also discusses how another boyfriend of hers took her virginity in a non-consensual act, “without asking first, without kissing me, without so much as looking me in the eyes or even confirming if I was awake.”
“I was seventeen years old and wanted my boyfriend to like me,” she writes.
