Ellen DeGeneres issued a brief statement on social media after she was criticized for her Twitter account’s contribution to the Usain Bolt meme frenzy.

DeGeneres shared this doctored photo of her riding Bolt’s back as he finished first in the men’s 100 m event at the Olympics on Sunday coupled with the caption, “This is how I’m running errands from now on.”

Twitter followers were quick to point out that this meme was racially insensitive, one usercommenting, “@TheEllenShow so the first thing that pops in your head when looking at this pic is ‘oh let me jump onto his back like he’s a common mule’?”

DeGeneres responded to the criticism by explaining that she understands the context of the joke and noting that being a racist is the “furthest thing” from who she is.

DeGeneres was criticized for making a long-form racially insensitive joke last year when anEllen parody sketch of Nicki Minaj’s show on Freeform featured a black family whose butts had been enlarged to the point where they hindered the actor’s mobility.
