Think of Jennifer Aniston and you think of a true beauty icon. Her sunkissed glow, that hair and her pared-down makeup – it’s no secret her look has remained timeless over her 25-year career. From the days of Rachel Green, when she cemented herself as a 90s pin-up in Friends(and even had a haircut named after her), to being the part owner of her own haircare line, Living Proof, she’s had a major influence on the beauty industry and on everyone that follows it.
This summer, the 47-year-old actress has launched her third fragrance, Near Dusk. With notes of nectarine, coconut and musk, it’s the smell of summer and transitions seamlessly from day to night. She sat down with Glamour Magazine to talk all things beauty, from what products she swears by to who her own beauty icons are, and reveals the three wardrobe items every woman should have.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE FRAGRANCE?
I’ve always love fragrance and have been making my own for a long time by mixing oils and lotions. I love the process of doing that so when I was approached to create Near Dusk, I was so excited and it definitely felt like a very organic decision.
HOW DOES WEARING FRAGRANCE MAKE YOU FEEL?
I wear fragrance everyday and always think of it like “the last accessory” – a kind of completion of my outfit. It’s just something that makes you feel like you’re all buttoned up.
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE LOOK FOR WHEN THEY’RE SELECTING A FRAGRANCE?
The main thing is never having the perfume wear you. Don’t pick something you feel is too strong for you and don’t wear too much. Some people douse themselves in it – you want to wear a perfume and create moments with it, rather than, you know, walk into an elevator and gag from overload. Just wear it for yourself, a little behind the ear, nothing overpowering.
YOU’RE KNOWN TO HAVE INCREDIBLY GLOWY SKIN. WHAT ARE YOUR BEAUTY SECRETS?
Well, first and foremost I have my father to thank for that and my grandmother. They have beautiful skin so there’s genetics at play but I’ve always been very mindful of taking care of my skin. I always wash it properly, drink lots and lots of water and I really believe that what you put inside your body reflects through your skin. I remember during teenage years and even in my twenties, I kind of thought I was invincible, as you do at that age, and could eat all the crap in the world but it affected my skin. I had a few more blemishes and sometimes an uneven tone, but now I take care of it. It changes as you get older and evolves and you need to progress your regime with time.
WHAT BEAUTY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
I always think, ‘why didn’t someone make me wear sunscreen?’ Again, it comes back to being young and thinking I was invincible – I thought that dewy, tanned skin would just stay beautiful but you have to protect it. I understand it’s not easy, it’s hard to keep remembering and reapplying but it’s so worth it.
YOUR HAIR HAS ALWAYS DRAWN MASSIVE PRAISE, WHAT IS THE BEST TIP YOU’VE EVER HAD FROM A HAIR STYLIST?
I don’t wash it every day and I would say finding a great product like a leave in conditioner or a dry shampoo will allow you not to have to do it so much. You just don’t want to strip away the oils. Also, try to keep it away from heat as much as possible. It’s hard in this industry because you’re constantly being blowed and curled but leaving it natural as often as possible can really help its health.
WHO ARE YOUR BEAUTY ICONS?
Brigitte Bardot is a total beauty icon with her gorgeous ’60s look. Gloria Steinem is ageless and so extraordinarily strong, the kind of beauty that is all encompassing. Blake Lively is also stunning and Kate Moss has incredible style.
WHAT BEAUTY TREND DO YOU HATE RIGHT NOW AND WHY?
It doesn’t matter to me because I don’t follow them because it makes me feel like I’m getting caught up in something that I haven’t created.
WHAT THREE BEAUTY PRODUCTS DO YOU ALWAYS CARRY IN YOUR HANDBAG?
I love Dr. Hauschka lip balm, factor 50 SPF, a small hand moisturiser and a fragrance – but that’s a fourth!
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE BEAUTY TIP FOR TRAVELLING?
Flying really does take a toll on your skin with the lack of oxygen so my number one tip is water, water, water to keep hydrated and I love a facemask so that you’re constantly moisturising your face. There’s not a specific one I like, I usually try all sorts. My facialist gives me those paper sheet masks that you can just let sit on your skin. You look like Freddy Krueger but it’s okay because it’s doing such good stuff for your skin but do be prepared, people will pass you on the plane and think you look kind of terrifying.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE THREE ITEMS EVERY WOMEN SHOULD HAVE IN HER CLOSET?
A great black blazer, a great pair of jeans and a beautiful wedge shoe. There’s always a scarf, but again, that’s a fourth!
