Katy Perry released a new single “Rise” today (July 15, 2016), but no, it’s not a collaboration with Calvin Harris.
That doesn’t make it any less important, however! Perry explained in a video to the Today Show the premise behind the new song:
I was inspired to finish it now rather than save it for the [new upcoming] album because of the overall mood of the world today. Now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite. I know that together we can rise above the fear in our country and around the world. And I can’t think of a better example coming up than the Olympic athletes,as they gather together in Rio with their strength and fearlessness to remind us how we all can come together with the result to be the best that we can be.
“Let’s be inspired, let’s heal, let’s unite, and rise,” she added.
She also tweeted that “Rise” has been chosen to be the Olympic’s anthem before and during the games.
