Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult hit the red carpet yesterday (July 7, 2016) for the premiere of their new science fiction romance Equals.
A peroxide blonde Stewart looked stunning in sheer, while Hoult looked dapper in a three-piece suit.
Drake Doremus’ Equals follows two lovers Nia and Silas played by Stewart and Hoult. Forbidden from actually expressing their love for one another due to their utopian, futuristic society in which emotions are said to be eradicated, they follow their hearts anyways, risking death.
“It wasn’t about learning lines,” Stewart said on working with Doremus in Equals. “It was about breaking down barriers and getting to know each other.”
Hoult added, “It’s kind of like these characters have been alive and know how to do everything a human knows how to do, but they don’t feel. So, it’s like a baby feeling emotions for the first time, but not knowing how to process them.”
On making a sci-fi romance, Doremus commented, “I was never really a sci-fi nerd, but I was always fascinated with the genre. I thought it was an interesting landscape to set a love story and try to doing something warm. Most sci-fi films to me are very cold and very distant and I wanted to make something that was the opposite of that.”
Also starring Jacki Weaver, Aurora Perrineau and Tom Stokes, Equals originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year.
Equals has been acquired in the US by A24 and DirecTV and is set for a July 15 theatrical release.
