After sweeping the 2016 Rio Olympics, Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, is ready to throw in the towel and this time he means it.
Mirroring a similar declaration made just four years ago, Phelps sat down with Matt Lauer on the Today Show this morning (Aug. 15, 2016) to announce he is officially retiring.
“Done, done, done and this time I mean it,” he insisted to Lauer. “I wanted to come back and finish my career how I wanted and this was the cherry on top of the cake.”
The swimmer more than accomplished his task of ending his career with a “cherry on top,” picking up six more medals during the 2016 Rio Olympics, bringing his total to 28 medals throughout his career, 23 of them gold.
