The ghosts couldn’t slime their way past friendly pets.
Ghostbusters opened at the box office with a solid $46 million this weekend, but it couldn’t quite top the animated hit The Secret Life of Pets, which took first place for the second week in a row with $50.6 million and brought its 10-day total to $203.2 million.
Despite the backlash from the Ghostbro haters, the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, gathered mostly favorable reviews, with a 73% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Legend of Tarzan squeaked by Finding Dory to place third with $11.1 million, while Dory was fourth with $11 million. The Pixar sequel now stands with a $445.5 million haul makes it the highest-grossing animated film ever.
Rounding out the top five was the balls-out comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which took in $7.5 million.
