Antonio Banderas has been enlisted to play Gianni Versace in a forthcoming film being made about the late designer.
Filming will reportedly start in December in Milan, before moving to Reggio Calabria where Versace was born then Miami where he was tragically shot and killed in 1997, aged 50.
Versace famously founded the eponymous family-run brand, using his little sister, Donatella Versace, as his muse. The label was known for its high-octane glamour, flamboyance and its love of gold and Versace dressed women from Diane, Princess of Wales to Elizabeth Taylor.
After he was killed by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, Donatella succeeded her brother as creative director.
The label itself has distanced itself from the film, telling WWD that, it “has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” The project will be headed up by award-winning director Bille August.
