Wearing heels damages your vocal chords. Its another reason to let go of them.

Leading voice and communication coach Helen Sewell told Parliament that wearing high heels could result in faster, shallow breathing which negatively impacts the vocal chords. She also said such shoes could be detrimental to a woman’s success, arguing that those who wear heels are less able to project an “executive presence” because their brains are subconsciously forced to maintain their balance in an unnatural posture.

The wearing of high heels “makes you think less clearly by adversely affecting your breathing pattern and prevents you from projecting your voice properly, forcing you to compensate in ways which risk causing vocal cord damage,” said Sewell, who also claimed that inappropriate footwear costs British businesses £260 million a year as women take sick leave for ailments and injuries caused by heels.

“When standing, high heels knock you off balance, forcing part of your brain to concentrate on steadying yourself on tiptoes rather than communicating with others,” Sewell said.  “However comfortable you feel in heels, they make the balance part of your brain work overtime.”

She added that attitudes of wearing high heels could lead to a “generation of women with serious health problems”.

The inquiry was set up after an e-petition calling for it to be illegal for women to be required to wear heels at work. It has ben signed by 150,000.

Earlier this year, a London receptionist was sent home without pay for not wearing heels.
