Zoe Saldana has revealed that she suffers from an autoimmune disease, known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The disease also affects her mother and sister, it requires the “Star Trek Beyond” actress to eat clean in order to control it. In an interview with The Edit magazine, the 38 year old revealed that she and her husband Marco have cut out all things gluten and diary due to her disorder. “Your body doesn’t have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection, so it’s always inflamed. You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean,” she explained.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a disorder which causes the immune system to turn against the body’s own tissues and attack the thyroid gland. The disease can lead to a condition which causes the thyroid gland to produce a lack of hormones that are needed to control the body’s metabolism.
Although Saldana, has her diet under control, Zoe Saldana admitted that she never thought she’d end up with the disease she witnessed her mother living with: “I would hear those conversations with my mom and grandma, thinking I’d never get there. ‘I’m going to live forever!’ But all of a sudden it hits you. I s*** you not, it’s from night to day,” she said.
